Eastern Standards Committee recommendations from November 7, 2008

Standard samples

The Eastern Standards Committee recommended the following new standard samples for the 2008-09 crop year:

  • Soybeans, No. 1 Canada Yellow
  • Soybeans, No. 2 Canada Yellow
  • Peas, No. 1 Canada Yellow
  • Peas, No. 2 Canada Yellow
  • Pea Beans (Reasonably Good Colour)

The Eastern Standards Committee also recommended the following guides for the 2008-09 crop year

  • Wheat, No. 2 Canada Eastern Red (Winter)  (Mildew Guide)

Standard samples provide a visual definition of “degree of soundness” in the Standard of Quality for each grain. Standard samples previously adopted for other grades and grains will continue to be used.

Grading studies and projects

The Canadian Grain Commission is studying the impact of mildew on end-use functionality using samples of Canada Eastern Soft Red Winter wheat.

The Canadian Grain Commission continues to study the relationship between the percentage of fusarium-damaged kernels and values for deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium graminearum.

Work is delayed temporarily on a study looking at implementing falling number as a grading factor for eastern Canadian wheat and using Rapid Visco Analysis (RVA) to assess this factor. The reason for the delay is that the Canadian Grain Commission does not have enough samples of sprouted wheat from the 2008 Harvest Survey in eastern Canada.
