Grading studies and projects

The Western Standards Committee recommended that the Grain Research Laboratory conduct another impact study of hard vitreous kernels on the end-use functionality of red spring wheat. The committee also recommended that a cost-benefit analysis be undertaken before any decision is made to remove of hard vitreous kernels as a grading factor for red spring wheat.

The Western Standards Committee recommended that the Canadian Grain Commission continue work in 2 projects:

  • Assessing chlorophyll in canola using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIR) technology
  • Predicting falling number in wheat using the Rapid Visco Analysis (RVA) method

The Canadian Grain Commission continues to study the relationship between fusarium-damaged kernels and deoxynivalenol (DON) and the evolutionary shift in Fusarium graminearum. The shift may be causing a change in the amount of toxin produced by the fungus.
