Canadian Grain Commission announces upcoming grain variety deregistrations

Winnipeg, July 19, 2010 – “Know what you grow,” says Elwin Hermanson, Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission. “That’s what we’re asking Canadian grain producers to do. When you know that you’re growing registered grain varieties, you help maintain Canada’s reputation for marketing high quality grain and you help preserve access to key international markets for your grain.”

“The Canadian Grain Commission is committed to helping you stay informed about variety deregistrations. As part of this, every August 1, we tell you which varieties will be deregistered. This gives you time to make seeding decisions that work for you,” Hermanson explains.

The Canadian Grain Commission advises that the following wheat varieties belonging to the Canada Prairie Spring White (CPSW) class will be deregistered effective April 28, 2011:

• Snowhite 475
• Snowhite 476

After April 28, 2011, these varieties will only be eligible for the grade Wheat, Canada Western Feed.

The Canadian Grain Commission advises that the following wheat variety belonging to the Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) class will be deregistered effective August 1, 2013:

• Garnet

After August 1, 2013, this variety will only be eligible for the grade Wheat, Canada Western Feed.

The Canadian Grain Commission advises that the following flaxseed varieties will be deregistered effective August 1, 2013:

• CDC Mons
• CDC Normandy

After August 1, 2013, these varieties will only be eligible for the grade Flaxseed, 3 Canada Western/Canada Eastern.

To find out if your grain varieties are eligible for the highest grades, you can check the variety designation lists on the Canadian Grain Commission’s web site.
