Canada Western/Eastern food barley

The following varieties have been recently developed specifically for food uses and registered under the Seeds Act:

Food, Hulless Barley

  • CDC Alamo (waxy, high beta-glucan)
  • CDC Ascent (waxy, high beta-glucan)
  • Enduro (waxy, high beta-glucan)
  • CDC Fibar (waxy, high beta-glucan)
  • CDC Rattan (waxy, high beta-glucan)
  • CDC Hilose (high amylose, high beta-glucan)
  • CDC Marlina (waxy, high beta-glucan)

Food, Covered Barley

  • Canmore (normal starch)

Definitions

Starch
Starch is composed of a mixture of two polysaccharides: amylose and amylopectin. Normal starch contains about 75% amylopectin and 25% amylose
Waxy starch
Waxy starch consists mostly of amylopectin. Waxy barley refers to grain containing mostly amylopectin (>95%) in its starch.
High amylose
High amylose barley refers to grain containing about 40% amylose in its starch.
High beta-glucan
High beta-glucan barley refers to grain containing ≥6.5% beta-glucans.
