Quality of western Canadian canola 2013

Glucosinolate content

Total glucosinolate content averaged 10 µmoles/g, similar to what was observed in 2012 and 2011 (10 and 11 µmoles/g, respectively). Since 2008, total glucosinolate content averages have remained in the 10 µmoles/g range (Table 1, Figure 10). There were no real differences in total glucosinolates content among the various crop districts (Table 7, 8 and 9). This is a direct result of efforts by various breeding programs to maintain low glucosinolate content, and it is also linked to the Canadian canola registration program (Western Canadian Canola Rapeseed Registration Committee).

The average level of total seed glucosinolates in the November 2013 canola exports was 12 µmoles/gof seed, similar to the average of the 2012-13 shipping season (14 µmoles/g of seed) (Table 6). Glucosinolate content of canola exports for the 2013-14 shipping season will remain similar to the averages observed during the 2012-2013 shipping season (Table 6).
