Submitted grain sample inspections

Grain producers and grain companies can send grain samples to the Canadian Grain Commission for inspection and analytical services. The Canadian Grain Commission will provide impartial results that can be used when marketing or negotiating fair value for your grain.

Who can request an inspection

Canadian grain producers and grain companies can request inspection and analytical services for any grains regulated under the Canada Grain Act.

Prepare a sample

Follow proper sampling procedures to make a grain sample that accurately represents the quality of your grain. The sample must weigh at least 1000 grams. If you are requesting additional analytical testing, include an additional 1000 grams of grain for each test requested.

How to request an inspection

Grain producers and grain companies can send unofficial grain samples for inspection. Grain samples are unofficial unless they are taken by a Canadian Grain Commission representative or other Canadian Grain Commission-authorized sample collection party. To submit an unofficial grain sample for inspection, download the form to request a submitted sample inspection and complete sections A, C, D, E and F. Include your payment information on the form.

To submit a grain sample for inspection through the Certified Container Sampling Program or the Accredited Container Sampler Program, download and complete the appropriate form.

Send your sample and completed form by mail or courier to the nearest Canadian Grain Commission office. You may also bring your sample to a Canadian Grain Commission service centre or regional office.

There is a fee for this service. Additional fees may apply for analytical services. The Canadian Grain Commission will send an invoice to companies submitting samples through the Certified Container Sampling Program or Accredited Container Sampler Program.

Receiving inspection results

A certificate with the results of the inspection will be issued within 5 business days after the sample has been inspected and all tests have been completed.

If your sample is unofficial, the certificate issued by the Canadian Grain Commission applies only to the grain sample you send for grading. The results are not official and do not apply to the entire lot of grain from which you take your sample.

If your company is certified by the Canadian Grain Commission through the Certified Container Sampling Program, you will receive a Certified Submitted Sample certificate. If your company is accredited by the Canadian Grain Commission through the Accredited Container Sampler Program, you will receive an Official Inspection Certificate. The results on these certificates apply to the entire lot of grain.
