Inquire about grain company licences and exemptions

The Canadian Grain Commission determines if grain companies must be licensed according to the Canada Grain Act and the Canada Grain Regulations. If you deal in or handle grain and you’re not licensed or exempted by the Canadian Grain Commission, you may face prosecution. To find out if your grain company must be licensed, complete the Mode of Operations questionnaire and email it to licence@grainscanada.gc.ca. Contact the Canadian Grain Commission if you have any questions about the questionnaire.

Based on the information you provide, the Canadian Grain Commission will determine if your company must be licensed and will notify you of the decision. If your company must be licensed, you’ll also be notified of the type of licence you need and the next steps to become licensed. Certain types of grain companies are outside the jurisdiction of the Canada Grain Act. Learn about types of unlicensed grain companies.
