Split Pea Grade Schedules effective August 1, 2017

This memorandum replaces memo 2016-02 and is to confirm that effective August 1, 2017, the grades by order for yellow and green split peas that were implemented, are still in effect.

In order to facilitate the handling and marketing of split peas from Canada and upon the recommendation from the Western and Eastern Standards Committees, the Canadian Grain Commission has created grades by order for yellow and green split peas. Grade schedules for both classes are attached. Moisture testing of split pea samples will be performed as outlined in the moisture testing section of the Official Grain Grading Guide.

Standards of quality for split peas

Definitions

Classes:
Split peas are graded according to the colour of their cotyledon. The colour of the split peas is added to the grade name.
Foreign material:
Foreign material is classified as all material other than split peas and pea hulls. Dockage is not assessed on samples of split peas.
White caps:
Split peas with more than one-eighth of the seed surface covered by attached seed coat.
Split peas:
Are classified as broken peas that are less than three-quarters the whole seed.
Bleached:
Applies to the grading of green split peas only. Green split peas are considered bleached if one-quarter or more of the surface of the cotyledon is bleached distinctly yellow.
Other colours:
Other colours include any whole and split peas that are obviously of another colour. For grading purposes in yellow split peas, if one-quarter or more of the surface of the cotyledon is distinctly green, the pea is considered as an “Other Colour”.
Sound whole peas
Refers to whole peas of the same cotyledon colour with the hull intact. Whole peas with the hull removed are not considered as a grading factor as they will split apart when cooked.
Other damage
Refers to any type of damage that penetrates the cotyledon of the split pea. Discolourations confined to the surface of the cotyledons will be assessed as stained and graded according to the “Degree of Soundness” specification.
Degree of soundness
Good natural colour: Splits are bright, normal colour and free of earth tag.
Fair Colour: Normal colour. May be lightly earth tagged or lightly stained.
