Fusarium incidence based on the percentage of Fusarium damaged kernels present was determined for CWAD wheat. In 2016, highest incidence of Fusarium was found in samples from central, northern and northeastern Saskatchewan, CD-2 in Manitoba and CD- 4 in Alberta. Average incidence in southwestern Alberta crop districts was lower in comparison.

Fusarium graminearum was detected by qPCR in Fusarium damaged kernels from Alberta and Saskatchewan. In 2016, high average levels of Fusarium graminearum was found in the majority of FDK from Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The frequency of Fusarium trichothecene gentoypes by DON-producing Fusarium spp. in 2016 CWAD in western Canadian crop districts was determined. Trichothecene chemotyping revealed a predominance of 15Ac-DON in both eastern Alberta and western Saskatchewan. A predominance of 3Ac-DON was observed in central Saskatchewan, specifically, CD-2B, CD-6A and CD-8B. Both 3Ac-DON and 15-Ac-DON were found in the majority of western Canadian crop districts tested.

Average severity of Fusarium head blight was determined for the 2016 crop of CWAD wheat. FDK severity for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba ranged from 0-4%. Central and northern Saskatchewan had the highest levels of FDK of the western prairie provinces. Average Fusarium severity was low in western Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan.

Fusarium avenaceum was detected by quantitative PCR in Fusarium damaged kernels for all crop districts from the Prairie provinces. In 2016, Fusarium avenaceum associated with FDK was detected at higher levels in northwestern Saskatchewan and CD-3, CD-4 and CD-5 in Alberta.

Fusarium incidence based on the percentage of Fusarium damaged kernels present was determined for CWRS wheat. In 2016, highest incidence of Fusarium was found in samples from southern Manitoba and eastern and central Saskatchewan. Average incidence in Alberta crop districts was lower in comparison.

Fusarium graminearum was detected by qPCR in Fusarium damaged kernels from Canada’s prairie provinces. In 2016, Fusarium graminearum was found in the majority of FDK from Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba and western Manitoba. Average levels of F. graminearum in Alberta were highest in CD-1.

The frequency of Fusarium trichothecene gentoypes by DON-producing Fusarium spp. in CWRS in western Canadian crop districts was determined for the 2016 crop. Trichothecene chemotyping revealed a predominance of 15Ac-DON in southeastern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan. A predominance of 3Ac-DON was found in northeastern Saskatchewan and northwestern Manitoba. 3Ac-DON was also found in western and northern Alberta, with higher levels in CD-4 and CD-7. Both 3Ac-DON and 15-Ac-DON were found in the majority of western Canadian crop districts tested.

Average severity of Fusarium head blight was determined for the 2016 crop of CWRS wheat. FDK severity for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba ranged from 0-1.5%. The highest levels of FDK were in CD-3BS in Saskatchewan, followed by CD-7A in Saskatchewan and CD-8 in Manitoba. Average Fusarium severity was low in the western prairies in 2016.

Severity of Fusarium head blight was determined for the 2014 crop of CWRS wheat. Fusarium severity for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba ranged from 0-4%. Eastern and central Saskatchewan, namely CD’s 11, 21, 22, 62 and 82 displayed the highest levels of FDK in the western prairies.

Fusarium avenaceum and Fusarium acuminatum were detected by quantitative PCR in Fusarium damaged kernels for western Canadian prairie CDs containing FDK. Fusarium avenaceum and Fusarium acuminatum associated with FDK were found in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Average concentrations of fusarium damaged kernels (by weight) in Canada Western Soft White Spring wheat ranged between 0 and 2%. Highest levels were found in samples from crop districts in southwestern and central Saskatchewan. No samples were analyzed from Manitoba.

Average concentrations of DON above 2 milligrams per kilogram were highest in samples from crop district 82 in central Saskatchewan. Elevated average concentrations between 1 and 2 milligrams per kilogram were observed in Saskatchewan crop districts 22, 51, 52, and 61, and Alberta crop district 2.

No winter wheat samples from the eastern region were analyzed.
