Quality of western Canadian peas 2017

5. Protein content

Protein content for yellow and green peas ranged from 16.3% to 30.3% (Table 2). The mean protein content for western Canadian peas was 22.6%, which was higher than the mean of 22.1% for 2016, but lower than the ten-year mean protein content of 23.0% (Figure 2). Table 3 represents the mean protein and starch content for yellow and green peas by crop region (Figure 3).

Figure 2. Mean protein content of western Canadian peas

Mean protein content of western Canadian peas, 2007 to 2017. Details below.

The graph depicts the annual average protein content of all peas from 2007 through 2017, and the 10-year (2007 to 2016) average. Each point represents the average protein content of peas in that crop year. A solid line connects the points, showing the variation of the average protein contents from 2007 through 2017. The dashed line represents the mean protein content of peas (23.0%) over a 10-year period from 2007 to 2016. Average protein contents from 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 (24.7%, 23.2%, 23.9%, 23.5% and 23.4%, respectively) were all above or equal to the 10-year average of 23.0%, while those from 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016 (22.4%, 22.6%, 22.0%, 22.1% and 22.1%, respectively) were below the 10-year average.
